The Short Version

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the most well-rounded pair of wireless headphones you can buy in 2026. Sony refined everything that made the XM4 great — better noise cancellation, cleaner sound, lighter weight — while keeping the 30-hour battery life that makes competitors look lazy. At $399, it's not cheap, but the value-to-performance ratio is hard to beat.

Sound Quality

The XM5 delivers a warmer, more refined sound signature compared to the XM4. The new Integrated Processor V1 and 30mm carbon fiber composite drivers bring tighter bass and clearer mids. We tested across genres:

• Pop/Rock: Punchy, energetic. Bass guitar has real texture without muddying the mix.
• Classical: Wide soundstage for closed-back headphones. String section separation is impressive.
• Electronic: Deep sub-bass extension. Drop hits feel physical without being boomy.
• Podcasts: Crystal-clear vocals. The EQ preset "Clear Bass" at level 1 hits the sweet spot.

Sony's companion app offers a 5-band EQ with presets. "Bright" adds treble sparkle without harshness — our preferred setting for most music.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)

Sony upgraded from the XM4's QN1 chip to a new integrated V1 processor with 8 microphones (up from 6). In our tests:

Battery Life

Sony claims 30 hours with ANC on. In our real-world testing (70% volume, ANC on, mixed music and podcasts), we got 28 hours 40 minutes — close enough to the claim. A 3-minute quick charge gives 3 hours of playback. Full charge via USB-C takes about 1.5 hours.

Comfort & Build

At 250g, the XM5 is 2g lighter than the XM4 and noticeably lighter than the AirPods Max (385g). The synthetic leather ear cushions are soft and breathable — we wore them for 6+ hours with no hotspot or fatigue. The headband distributes weight evenly, and the clamping force is firm enough for walking without being tight.

The plastic build feels premium but is less metal-heavy than the AirPods Max. The matte finish resists fingerprints. Touch controls on the right earcup are responsive — tap to play/pause, swipe to adjust volume, cover to activate Quick Attention mode.

Call Quality

Sony added 4 beamforming mics and AI-based noise reduction for calls. In our testing, call recipients reported clear voice with minimal background noise — even in a busy café. Wind noise suppression is decent but not perfect on a windy street. Better than most wireless headphones, slightly behind AirPods Pro 2.
